Battambang
Located around three hours west of Siem Reap by road, Battambang is arguably Cambodia's most attractive provincial city. The town combines French colonial architecture, a relaxed riverside atmosphere and a flourishing arts scene.
Many long-term residents consider Battambang to be the perfect weekend destination because it feels distinctly different from Siem Reap while remaining easy to reach.

From Siem Reap, travellers typically fly or take a bus to Phnom Penh before continuing south by road.

Kampot

Just twenty minutes from Kep lies Kampot, a town that has become one of Cambodia's most popular destinations among expatriates.

Highlights include visits to pepper plantations, sunset cruises on the Kampot River and excursions to Bokor National Park. The cooler climate on Bokor Mountain provides a welcome break from the heat of the lowlands.

Koh Rong

For those seeking white-sand beaches and turquoise water, Koh Rong remains Cambodia's premier island destination. The island can be reached via ferry from Sihanoukville after travelling from Siem Reap by air, bus or private vehicle. While parts of the island have seen substantial tourism development, much of Koh Rong remains surprisingly undeveloped.

Koh Rong Sanloem
For those seeking tranquillity rather than nightlife, neighbouring Koh Rong Sanloem may be a better choice. Saracen Bay offers calm swimming conditions, while Lazy Beach consistently ranks among Cambodia's most beautiful stretches of sand.
Many visitors combine Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem into a single extended island trip.
Mondulkiri

The eastern province of Mondulkiri offers scenery unlike anywhere else in the country.
Rolling hills, pine forests and cooler temperatures create an atmosphere that feels remarkably different from tropical Cambodia. The provincial capital, Sen Monorom, serves as the base for exploring waterfalls, indigenous communities and elephant conservation projects.
The region's best-known attraction is the ethical elephant experiences offered by organisations such as the Elephant Valley Project. Travellers should allow at least three or four days due to the longer travel times from Siem Reap.
Kratie
Located along the Mekong River, Kratie offers a glimpse of a slower, more traditional Cambodia. The town's primary attraction is the endangered Irrawaddy Dolphin population found nearby. Boat trips provide excellent opportunities to observe these rare animals in their natural habitat. The riverside setting, cycling opportunities and relaxed pace make Kratie an excellent destination for a quiet long weekend.
Banlung and Ratanakiri
For adventurous travellers, Banlung provides access to one of Cambodia's least-visited regions.
The area is known for crater lakes, waterfalls, indigenous minority communities and forest landscapes.
The emerald waters of Yeak Laom Lake are particularly beautiful and offer some of Cambodia's best freshwater swimming. The journey is long, but the sense of discovery rewards those willing to venture further east.
Pursat and the Cardamom Mountains
The vast Cardamom Mountains region remains one of Southeast Asia's most important wilderness areas.
Accessed through parts of Pursat Province and Koh Kong Province, the area offers opportunities for trekking, wildlife observation, kayaking and eco-tourism.
Several eco-lodges now provide comfortable accommodation while maintaining access to remote forest environments.This destination appeals particularly to nature lovers and photographers.
Phnom Penh
